Branding your personal development

Dear Ms Anonymous,

Have you ever thought about branding your personal development? When was the last time you looked at your personal development from the lens of marketing?

When developing your personal brand think of it in terms of marketing yourself.

We are all growing and evolving as people. When we start to consider ourselves like a newly formed company, we get to decide how we want to show up in the world. In order for us, as a brand new company, our new selves, to show up in the world, we have some decisions to make.

Branding through the marketing lens

Let’s look at the various ways a brand creates their identity. First, they have a message they want to spread. A logo is designed as a visual representation of who they are. Then, there’s creating a presence – their appearance, their voice, their standards for conducting business. Lastly, they must show up consistently and authentically in order to succeed.

How does this relate to personal development?

When you are creating your identity, or branding yourself, you get to decide all of those things about how you want to show up in the world.

Breaking down branding

  1. Your message. We all have a message we want to share with the world. It’s in the way we communicate, the way we live, the way we act. Personal development requires us to elevate ourselves. Our message should be one of positivity, productivity, motivation, and dedication. The message that the world knows about us when they hear our name. Make it the best one possible, so that your brand can succeed. So that YOU can succeed!
  2. Your logo. This is the visual representation of who you are. How do you physically want to show up in the world? Do you dress professionally, or always wear gym attire? Are you walking with your spine erect, or are you hunched over? Do you exude confidence, or are you sitting in the shadows hoping no one notices you? It’s up to you to create the visual representation of yourself that you want others to see, and associate you with.
  3. Your presence. When you show up, are you dressed for the part? Are you articulating your message loud and clear? Does your voice sound confident and authentic? Do you conduct yourself in a professional manner, inside and outside of the boardroom?
  4. Your success. Have you set yourself up for success? Do you continue to show up for yourself even when times are tough? Are you ready to be your best self, even on days when it’s hard to get out of bed? How do you define your success?

Personal development is a process

Personal development is a process. Just like becoming a successful brand, becoming a personal success takes time and effort. You must show up consistently and work towards improvement. Believing that your success is possible is one of the biggest parts of the process. If you don’t believe in yourself, then you will likely not achieve the success you want.

Personal development requires you to do the hard work yourself. Say goodbye to the days of you blaming everyone else for you not achieving what you want. It’s up to you to create your success.

Developing yourself requires you to sit in the darkroom of your life for a while. To go deep on understanding your core beliefs, and why you believe them. You have to figure out your limiting beliefs, and how they have prevented you from achieving the things that you have wanted. And once the things that have held you back have come to light, you will be able to process and move forward.

Branding your personal development requires you to know what you want to achieve. There is not a single brand out there that doesn’t have a vision and mission statement. They are the guiding principles that lead them towards success. You have to know what your target is, in order to aim for it.

You don’t have to do it alone

The most successful people know that they can’t achieve success alone. Sometimes you have to reach out for help or guidance from a coach, a mentor, or a friend.

    1. Sally!! I’m so glad you loved this post! And I’m so happy you’ve been a loyal follower from the start! 😀

  1. I love this! I have been looking at branding in a general sense, but I love how you drive it home in such a personal way! If we look at ourselves as a brand, would we trust it? Lol I feel like this opens us up to so much self reflection, and encourages us to really be who we admire. Thanks for the encouragement!

    1. I never thought about myself as a personal brand before this year. Recently I’ve been examining how I’m showing up in the world and that has given me so much motivation to become the best version of myself!
